Amazon simplifies product variation management with pre-filled Excel files
Everyone selling on Amazon knows how delicate product variation management is: different sizes, colours, flavours or formats of the same item have to be linked correctly, otherwise you risk creating:
- confusion in the catalogue
- misaligned offers
- in the worst cases, the exclusion of the entire family from the detail page.
Well, with the new update announced by Amazon this process becomes simpler, faster and above all less exposed to manual errors. But what exactly is changing?
We have summarised all the news in this in-depth look.

Why this update is good news for sellers
Until now, adding a new product to an existing variation family meant manually rebuilding information that was, in fact, already present in the Amazon catalogue:
- variation attributes
- SKU structure
- relationships between parent and child ASINs.
Work that, especially for larger catalogues, easily turned into oversights, inconsistent values across the various children or variation families built incorrectly.
The main advantage of the new feature is therefore already clear. The spreadsheet you download does not start from scratch: it arrives pre-filled with the data of the variation family you want to add a product to. In practical terms this means:
- Less time spent gathering information. There is no longer any need to manually retrieve the variation’s attributes and structure: they are already there, ready in the file.
- Lower risk of error. Since the data of products already in the family is not to be touched, the chance of breaking a working variation relationship or accidentally creating a second parallel family drops dramatically.
- A single starting point, both for new products and for SKUs already in the catalogue. Whether you need to launch a new size never sold before, or simply start selling a variation that already exists in the Amazon catalogue but that you are not currently offering, the workflow always starts from the same place.
- Guaranteed consistency within the variation family. Working on a file that “already knows” the family’s brand, product type and variation theme makes it harder to introduce inconsistencies that could stop Amazon recognising the new product as part of the same family.

Pre-filled spreadsheets inside the product listing page
Amazon has built this feature straight into the Add Products page. The tool is already used by sellers to search for and upload items to the catalogue. From here, by searching for an existing product, it is now possible to open the view of its variations. And, again from here, to download a spreadsheet that already contains all the family’s information:
- the variations already active
- their attributes (colour, size, flavour, or whatever variation theme is being used).
At that point, the seller simply has to fill in the mandatory fields for the new products they intend to add. There is no need to re-enter the data of the existing variations from scratch. Then they can upload the file to complete the operation.
The new method replaces the variation creation wizard currently available, which will be retired by the end of August. Anyone who uses that tool regularly will therefore have to get used, over the coming months, to the new flow based on the pre-filled spreadsheet.

Learn MoreHow Amazon’s new feature works in practice
The procedure, as described by Amazon in a dedicated article, unfolds in a few essential steps:
- Go to the Add Products page. It is the single entry point for this new feature.
- Search for the product concerned. Use the search by keyword or by product identifier, and open the product information page.
- Click on “View variations” to access the variation family the product belongs to.
- Choose the action you want:
- Add new variations. If you want to create a completely new variation (for example a size or a colour not yet available) or add to the family an SKU that already exists in the catalogue but is not yet linked as a variation;
- Add an offer to the selected variations. If instead you simply want to start selling, that is, create an offer with a price and a quantity, for variations that are already part of the family but that you are not currently offering.
- Download the generated spreadsheet. The sheet is already pre-filled with the family’s data; only the fields required for the new products need completing.
- Upload the file to send the changes to Amazon.
As with other catalogue changes involving variations, it is reasonable to expect the system to need some time to process before the new relationships are actually created or updated. It is therefore advisable not to make further changes to the variation family straight after submitting, but to wait for the update to be completed.

A small change with a big operational impact
This is not the first time Amazon has stepped in to simplify catalogue management. Today’s update, however, touches a sore point that is keenly felt by anyone managing large variation families. The risk of manual errors when replicating attributes and SKU structures often forced sellers to intervene several times to correct variation families that had been built incorrectly or were out of line with the rest of the catalogue.
Centralising the process inside the product listing page, with a file that starts out already “aware” of the existing structure, reduces the margin for error and speeds up an operation that, especially for larger catalogues or for those frequently launching new seasonal variations, used to be repeated fairly regularly.
It is worth remembering that, with the variation creation wizard due to be retired by the end of August 2026, this new flow will become to all intents and purposes the standard tool for these operations. It is therefore useful to start getting familiar with the new method right away. That way you will not be caught unprepared when the previous tool is no longer available.

Amazon’s artificial intelligence does not look at the rankings (and for sellers that is very interesting!)
For years, anyone selling on Amazon has learned a simple rule. If you want to be seen, you have to climb its ranking or pay to appear among the sponsored ads. Two levers, two strategies, with a single goal: to occupy the top positions on the search page. But what happens when the person looking…
