Selling household products on Amazon

The market for home products on Amazon continues to grow at rather consistent rates. According to some recent forecasts, it is expected to continue doing so in the coming years. Let’s see why.

The reasons for such optimism are numerous. However, it’s worth mentioning that due to inflation and the increased cost of living, more and more people:

  • stay in their homes for longer hours, paying more attention to the care of their living spaces;
  • eat at home more often instead of going to restaurants, thereby increasing the demand for kitchen products;
  • have adopted flexible work options, with an increase in remote working;
  • search on Amazon for home products to save on the budget allocated for household supplies.

All of this translates, for Amazon sellers, into one very evident thing. The opportunities to profit from selling their home products on Amazon are growing. It’s highly likely that their catalog of home and kitchen products will meet the needs of an ever-growing number of people.

What do home products include?

The category of home products includes almost all objects or devices commonly used in the home or kitchen. It can be small appliances and gadgets, as well as any other product that promotes home care, decoration, and comfort. In short, any item that can function in a home falls into this category.

There are so many products potentially related to this category. Therefore, it’s not surprising that, according to JungleScout, it’s the main part of e-commerce on Amazon. In fact, over 35% of all brands sell products usable at home. But why is this the best-selling category on Amazon?

Why are home products the best-selling ones?

There are numerous reasons why home products are by far the best-selling items on Amazon.

Let’s start with the fact that they are products that almost everyone owns and uses. They are product categories that people are familiar with. Even if vendors decide to opt for selling more innovative products, they can still base their marketing strategy on a already fertile ground of experience.

Furthermore, Amazon does have many restricted categories that new sellers cannot access right away. Fortunately, this does not apply to home products where there are not many entry barriers.

Additionally, some home and kitchen items are extremely easy to make, especially if you are a skilled craftsman. If not, they can be easily procured from third-party suppliers, and subsequently customized. And even if you prefer to sell wholesale or have a drop-shipping business, the options for home and kitchen are endless.

How to find which home and kitchen products to sell

From flowerpots to food containers, the home products sector includes various items but… How can you know which ones to sell?

Regardless of the product you want to sell, product research is always the first step to creating a good sales strategy. During the research, you should not only look for best-selling products, although this is also essential. You should check which products appear better in organic searches on Amazon, using direct and related keyword research on various home and kitchen products.

Always stay updated with trends

Knowing consumer trends helps understand which items are requested by your target audience. And if you think (and you’re right!) that trends come and go, it’s true that some best practices are always valid:

  • the product should be easy to use and work in various environments, from large homes to small apartments;
  • the product should not only save time but also be fun to use!

There are also some current trends that sellers should observe. For example, due to inflation, more people are spending more time at home and substituting the purchase of finished products with do-it-yourself items. There are also more remote workers who need home office products. Furthermore, people are looking for multi-purpose products in order to save.

Are you sure that your product can meet these initial requirements? What needs does it intend to satisfy for these target customers?

Look at (but don’t copy!) what the best sellers are doing

Among the most useful features of Amazon is the list of the best-selling products for each category. Products are listed based on sales data and the speed of sale. The list is updated every hour. So, it’s always advisable to check it regularly to find the most popular products in real-time.

Then visit the Amazon pages of your competitors to see which items they are selling. If they have home products that you’re not selling, evaluate whether and how to add them to your inventory. Also, try to understand not only which products are the most successful but also those that are losing ground and market share.

In general, it’s also good to remember that when selling kitchen products, it’s preferable to sell affordable items that are not too difficult to produce (or source from third parties) and that are small enough to be shipped. Some examples could be food containers, cutting boards, salad bowls, glass and can holders, ceramics: evergreen items, always in demand, essential in every kitchen.

Things get even more interesting if we step out of the kitchen and take a tour of the rest of the house. Candles, artworks, small furniture, decorative items, and ornaments consistently attract a good volume of demand. In this case too, it’s always worth checking if they can be easily handmade or sourced from wholesalers or third-party drop-shippers…
